DESCRIPTION

CuW80 Tungsten Copper Alloy Block

CuW80 tungsten copper alloy block is one of the mainstream tungsten-copper composite materials manufactured and inspected strictly in accordance with GB/T 8320 standard, produced by mature vacuum copper infiltration powder metallurgy process. It consists of 80% tungsten and 20% copper, featuring low wear rate, high hardness, good dimensional stability and balanced electrical & thermal conductivity.

1. What is Tungsten Copper (WCu) Material

Tungsten Copper Alloy (WCu / CuW) is a high-performance two-phase pseudo-alloy composite material composed of pure tungsten and pure copper. Manufactured and fully inspected in strict accordance with GB/T 8320 national standard for copper-tungsten electrical contact alloys, this material cannot be produced by conventional melting technology. Tungsten and copper feature huge differences in melting point, with mutual insolubility in solid state and no intermetallic compound generation.

With a density of 15.15 g/cm³, Brinell hardness ≥220 HB, resistivity 5.0 nΩ·cm, electrical conductivity 34 %IACS and bending strength 980 MPa. The tungsten skeleton provides excellent high temperature resistance and arc ablation resistance, while copper phase offers reliable thermal dissipation and machinability. It can be processed by turning, milling, grinding and wire EDM.

Industrial qualified tungsten copper products are exclusively produced via the powder metallurgy vacuum copper infiltration process. This mature composite process forms a dense, pore-free and uniformly distributed tungsten-copper microstructure. WCu alloy perfectly integrates the core strengths of the two metals: tungsten provides high hardness, ultra-low thermal expansion, high-temperature dimensional stability and excellent arc ablation resistance, while copper delivers outstanding thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and superior machinability. It solves the industry bottleneck of single metals failing to balance high-temperature resistance and efficient heat dissipation, becoming an indispensable functional material for power electronics, precision EDM machining, semiconductor packaging and aerospace fields.

2. Core Performance Characteristics

• Controllable Low Thermal Expansion: Features tunable CTE that precisely matches silicon, ceramic and Kovar alloy substrates, effectively reducing thermal stress and structural deformation under alternating high-temperature working conditions, ideal for precision electronic packaging.

• Dual High Thermal & Electrical Conductivity: Retains copper’s excellent heat dissipation and conductive performance, rapidly exporting accumulated heat of high-power equipment and avoiding local overheating, breakdown or thermal failure.

• Superior Arc & Erosion Resistance: The rigid tungsten skeleton effectively resists high-voltage arc ablation, thermal shock and high-frequency current erosion. It maintains stable performance under frequent switching and extreme discharge environments, with a far longer service life than pure copper, brass and ordinary copper alloys.

• Excellent High-Temperature Stability: No softening, deformation, adhesion or structural failure under continuous high-temperature, high-pressure and high-current operation, ensuring long-term operational reliability.

• Flexible Precision Machinability: Easy to process via turning, milling, drilling, grinding and wire EDM. Supports customized holes, grooves, threads, chamfers and irregular special-shaped structures per customer drawings for all non-standard parts.

• Excellent Surface Compatibility: Adjustable surface flatness and roughness, compatible with polishing, nickel plating and gold plating, meeting strict requirements of high-end electronic assembly and semiconductor packaging.

3. GB/T 8320 Standard WCu Grades & Complete Performance Parameters

All tungsten copper alloy grades comply with GB/T 8320 national standard. A complete series from CuW50 to CuW90 covers full industrial application scenarios. Tungsten content directly determines the alloy’s mechanical and thermal properties: higher tungsten content improves hardness, density and high-temperature stability, while higher copper content enhances conductivity and heat dissipation performance. 4. Vacuum Copper Infiltration Manufacturing Process

Different from traditional mixing and sintering methods, our tungsten copper alloy adopts the standard vacuum copper infiltration process specified by GB/T 8320, which effectively eliminates internal pores, segregation and uneven structure, achieving full density and stable performance:

High-purity tungsten & copper powder proportioning & mixing → High-pressure compression molding → High-temperature tungsten skeleton sintering → High-temperature vacuum copper infiltration → Isothermal densification treatment → Precision CNC machining → Surface finishing → Strict factory inspection

Process Advantages: The pre-sintered porous tungsten skeleton ensures uniform capillary infiltration of molten copper under vacuum environment. The finished product features pore-free internal structure, uniform metal phase distribution, stable thermal and electrical performance, and excellent batch consistency, completely meeting national standard quality requirements.

5. Main Application Fields

• EDM Precision Machining Electrodes: Low electrode wear, stable discharge and clear machining contour, suitable for processing cemented carbide, high-hardness steel and complex precision molds.

• High-Voltage Power Electrical Components: Outstanding arc ablation resistance ensures long service life for high-voltage switches, circuit breakers, isolating switches and power transmission contact parts under frequent on-off operation.

• Semiconductor Heat Sinks & Electronic Packaging: Tunable low thermal expansion matches silicon and ceramic substrates perfectly, reducing thermal stress and improving structural stability for high-power semiconductor packaging and heat dissipation modules.

• Resistance Welding & Spot Welding Parts: High-temperature resistance and stable conductivity prevent thermal deformation and ablation during high-current welding, widely used for welding electrode heads and precision fixture components.
